The fall 2009 Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up will be held Saturday, October 10 at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds in Berea. County residents are invited to dispose of their unwanted oil-based paint, pesticides, and other household hazardous wastes.
Residents can also dispose of household hazardous waste at local collection events sponsored by participating cites. Please scroll down for a list of participating cities and collection dates.
The following items will be accepted at this collection event. The District can only accept materials that originated from a household and not a commercial source. “In accordance with Federal Law, our contractor is not allowed to accept or transport business waste with household waste due to EPA classifications. Currently, household hazardous wastes are not regulated and are exempt from RCRA classification.”
HOUSEHOLD MATERIALS ACCEPTED
Oil or solvent-based paint, sealers, primers, or coatings (aerosols or liquids)
Varnishes, polyurethanes, shellacs
Paint thinner, mineral spirits, turpentine
Pesticides, herbicides, fungicides
Caustic household cleaners
Automotive fluids, motor oil, car batteries
Adhesives, roof tar, driveway sealer
Kerosene, gasoline, lighter fluid
Mercury, fluorescent bulbs
MATERIALS NOT ACCEPTED
Latex paint
Explosives, gun powder, ammunition, flares
Medical waste, pharmaceuticals, sharps
Radioactive waste (i.e. smoke detectors)
DISPOSAL OF LATEX PAINT
The Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District does not accept latex paint at the Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up. Latex paint is comprised mostly of water and is not a hazardous material. To dispose of latex paint, solidify and place in your curbside trash.

DISPOSAL OF OTHER ITEMS
Residents can dispose of certain items year-round, without having to wait for a Round-Up. Wastes such as motor oil, antifreeze, propane tanks, aerosol cans, alkaline batteries and rechargeable batteries can be disposed of at various locations throughout Cuyahoga County. See our brochure Handle with Care: How to Properly Dispose of Hazardous Household Products for more information.
The Home Depot has a national compact fluorescent lightbulb (CFL) recycling program. At each Home Depot store, customers can simply bring in any expired, unbroken CFL bulbs, and give them to the store associate behind the returns desk.
EVENT BACKGROUND
The Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up is a free collection event available to all Cuyahoga County households. The Round-Up provides for the environmentally-safe disposal of hazardous, poisonous or toxic household products that cannot be disposed in the regular trash.
Since this program began in 1996, more than eight million pounds of hazardous household chemicals have been collected. When households improperly store or dispose of hazardous materials in the trash, storm drains, or the ground, they can pollute our environment and endanger the health and safety themselves, their family, pets, and sanitation workers.
The Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up is held twice a year at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds in Berea and at many city service departments. Residents who miss a collection event and have an immediate need for disposal can pay for the disposal of their own materials through an environmental services company.
This is the final Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up of the year. The next free collection event will be held in 2010.
